How To Sew The Lumiere Strapless Dress
The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Lumiere Strapless Dress—a stretchy beach-vibes dress with layers upon layers of fringe over re-embroidered lace.
Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
Step 1
SKIRT
- Serge the seams around the lace parts.
- Sew the waist lines of the front and back upper parts to the lower parts.
- Sew left side fully closed. Sew the right side from the hem, ending 2” below the waist line.
- Cut 2 pieces of ½” fusing and fuse the unsewn wrong side. This will stabilize your fabric from stretching when attaching the zipper.
Step 2
FRINGE
- Start from the hem line of the lace skirt. Sew rows of fringes 2.5” apart from each other up until the waist line. (front and back)
- The last trim strip should be attached upside down. Sew in place and carefully top stitch the fringes down.
Step 3
PREP LINING
- Follow step 1 but leave the left side open from top to 2” below the waist line. The right side should be fully closed. Make sure to fuse the side seam as well.
- To finish the hem, roll ¼” of the hem, press and sew. Repeat it again in order to get a clean ¼” rolled hem finish.
Step 4
ATTACH LINING
- Flip the lace inside out. Pull the lining on the right side facing the right side. Pin all around the top. Sew it closed.
- Flip the lace dress outside out. Open the seam at the top, press the seam allowance toward the lining and understitch.
- Flip to the inside of the dress. Cut an elastic band 5% smaller than your top measurement. Sew it on top of the seam allowance. Make sure to stretch it about 5% more as you sew. This will ensure the dress does not slip.
Step 5
ZIPPER
- Open your invisible zipper and press the teeth out gently.
- Pin one side of the zipper to the open side seam with the zipper teeth facing ½” away from the side seam fabric edge. Baste by hand. Sew it down by a machine.
- Repeat the same step on the other side. Make sure your zipper is tucked inside the dress, and isn’t twisted, able to close perfectly.
- Zip up the zipper to the waist (DON’T FULLY CLOSE IT!), cut the unnecessary bottom and lower top part. Stitch back and forth on the same area by hand with doubled thread on the edges. It will ensure the zipper from sliding off the teeth.
Step 6
SCALLOPED LACE, HOOK & EYE
- Cut a length of your own top length measurement plus 1” out of the scalloped edge from the remaining fabric.
- Pin the lace around the top of the dress from one side of the zipper to the other side (don’t go over the zipper). Sew and top stitch. Make sure to stretch the top itself as you sew but not the scalloped lace.
- Sew hook and eye on the edge of the extension for proper closure.
