The Roslyn Ruffled Midi Skirt Sizing Guide is based on the suggested design & wearing ease for this style. You can also choose the size according to your desired finished garment measurements, blending between sizes as needed. How to Sew The Roslyn Ruffled Midi Skirt
The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Roslyn Ruffled Midi Skirt from start to finish.
Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
Pattern Pieces & Fabric Cuts Needed
(A) SKIRT
- Tulle – Cut 2
- Lining – Cut 2
(B) RUFFLES
- Tulle – Cut 16
The Roslyn Ruffled Midi Skirt has 7 ruffles on the front, 7 ruffles on the back, and one on each side seam.
You can add more ruffles to your midi skirt, as desired. To add more ruffles, divide the top edge of the skirt piece by the number of ruffles you want, and mark the points. Do the same with the bottom edge or the skirt, then connect the points to draw the ruffle placement lines.
5 Tips for Sewing with Tulle and Chiffon
⇒ Baste by hand before sewing on the machine. Both Tulle and Chiffon are delicate fabrics that can slide or snag as you sew.
⇒ Experiment with a longer stitch length or narrow zig zag stitch to help prevent puckering and provide more flexibility.
⇒ Instead of backstitching, secure the beginning and end of your seam by tying a knot or hand-tying the threads. Backstitching can create bulk and distortion.
⇒ When possible, we highly recommended using a rotary cutter and self-healing mat for clean, precise cuts as well as to prevent distortion that can happen with scissors.
⇒ Placing tissue paper, newspaper, or water-soluble stabilizer underneath and/or on top of tulle or chiffon can help prevent it from shifting, stretching, or getting “eaten” by the feed dogs. These materials can be carefully torn away after sewing.
Step 1
ATTACH RUFFLES TO SKIRT
(A) SKIRT – TULLE, (B) RUFFLES
- Sew from top to bottom the inner circle of each ruffle piece onto the skirt (from top to bottom). Repeat for 7 front ruffles, 7 back ruffles, and 2 side ruffles—follow the ruffle placement lines and make sure the ruffles overlap each other to the left.
- Machine baste the top of the ruffles around the top of the skirt waist. (Refer to the third photo under Step 1.)

Step 2
ATTACH SKIRT PIECES
(A) SKIRT – TULLE
- Pin the tulle skirt pieces with right sides to right sides (ruffles facing each other).
- Sew together down the skirt side seams, while making sure to keep the ruffles away from your seam as you sew.
Step 3
ASSEMBLE SKIRT LINING
(A) SKIRT – LINING
- Pin the front and back pieces of the skirt together, right side to right side. Before machine sewing, we recommend to baste stitch the side seams by hand since it’s a delicate fabric.
- Machine sew, using a straight stitch and a ½” seam allowance.
- Serge the side seams, trimming a ¼” of the seam allowance as you sew.
- Remove the baste stitches.
- Press the seam allowance to the back and flip the lining to the outside.

Step 4
HEM SKIRT LINING
- To finish the skirt lining hem, first roll a ¼” of the hem, then press and sew.
- Repeat by rolling another ¼”, (then pressing and sewing) in order to obtain a clean rolled hem.
Step 5
ATTACH SKIRT LINING TO SKIRT SHELL
- Insert the skirt lining with the right side facing out into the (tulle) skirt shell with the wrong side of the shell facing out—so that the right sides of the skirt lining and skirt shell are together.
- Pin both pieces together around the skirt waist, making sure the side seams of the lining match with the side seams of the (tulle) skirt shell.
- Machine baste around the skirt waist, ⅜” away from the edge.
Step 6
PREPARE ELASTIC WAISTBAND
Optional: Dye elastic waistband to match your tulle skirt shell.
- We used Rit All-Purpose Liquid Fabric Dye in Rosequartz to dye our elastic waistband in the perfect rosey shade.
- All you need is elastic, hot water, a pot, silver tongs, gloves—and of course, the dye!
- We heated the water on the stove, mixed in the dye, soaked the elastic until it reached the desired shade, then let it hang dry. That’s it!
MEASURE ELASTIC WAISTBAND
- To determine the elastic waistband length, measure your waistline and subtract 5% from it, then add a ½” for seam allowance.
- Fold in half, meeting short end to short end with right sides facing together, then serge.
Step 7
MARK/NOTCH WAISTBAND
Mark or snip an ⅛” notch on/into the waistband front and both sides:
- To find center front, fold and flatten the looped waistband in half with the serged end on one side; mark.
- To find both sides, fold and flatten the looped waistband in half with the serged end and notch meeting at the center; then mark each side.

Step 8
ATTACH WAISTBAND TO SKIRT
- Place and pin the serged seam of the waistband to the center back of the skirt.
- Sew the elastic waistband onto the skirt by stretching it up to 5%. Match your notches with the side seams and center front as you go.
- Serge the waistband seam closed.

I know these patterns are free, but it sure would be great if you could offer A0 PDFs – with layers – for projector sewing. If you’ve drafted the patterns it seems like the full pattern is even easier to create and A4 patterns really waste a ton of paper. I really value sustainability, and I know that a lot of people in the sewing community do as well.
Unfortunately we only offer 8.5×11 print format with the layered pattern sizes, but we really appreciate feedback like this to help us prioritize new additions to the blog in the future. This is definitely something we’re talking about and planning.
This would be the cutest Pride skirt, made up in the colors of the rainbow! def earmarking for next year!
Hi. Could you please recommend how much fabric is needed for the Roslyn Ruffled Midi Skirt for all the layers?
For S and M sizes
Thanks!
Hey there! The “Shop This Look” widget on the blog post recommends 6 yards of tulle and 2 yards of satin for the skirt in a size medium.
Anyone have a video of how to do the ruffles? I am not able to visualize it…I’m a quilter
Hi Stacy! After cutting the spiraled ruffle strips out of the tulle, you simply pin and sew one of the long sides all the way down the length of the skirt. You have to do this a total of 16 time. I hope this helps!
I loved this design when it came in my email last week, paired with the peplum corset top.
So much so, that I made the whole look for myself to wear to a dress up event (to watch a “Downton Abbey” matinee).
Since I live in a fabric desert, I could only sew on deadline with fabrics I had on hand. In place of the tulle, I used organza from a thrifted wedding gown for the ruffles, and the satin underskirt of the same for the base layer skirt and lining. It worked a charm, and left me with more room in my fabric stash, with the stunning beaded bodice still in reserve for another day
Has anyone made this into a maxi? How can I make the ruffles longer?
Is the skirt pattern meant to be cut on fold? Otherwise it would be to small for a front or back piece without a zipper.
Hi Nora
Actually the pattern piece shows the full piece. You need to cut 2: one for the back and one for the front. The piece is large enough; for example, the waistline for size S is 38″, slightly larger than the hips so the skirt can be put on easily. It is then reduced with elastic to fit at the waist. And it has the same amount of ease for the other sizes as well.
