Meet the Peak Pencil Skirt, the quiet overachiever of your winter wardrobe. She doesn’t shout. She doesn’t pile on drama. She simply slips on and suddenly everything feels intentional.
Cut from a warm, brushed wool twill that feels like a soft exhale against the skin, this skirt keeps you cozy without the bulk of layered survival gear. It’s warmth with posture. Insulation with polish. The kind of fabric that holds its shape while still inviting you to lean into candlelit dinners, brisk evening walks, and second helpings of dessert.
Whether you are a true beginner or a seasoned sewing veteran, this pencil skirt pattern is exceedingly simple with only two pattern pieces. You could sew it in an afternoon, press the hem while your coffee is still warm, and step out the door that very night with the confidence of someone who absolutely planned this all along.
The silhouette is classic pencil, but with just enough sharpness in the center front slit to earn its name. Clean lines skim the body without clinging, creating that long, uninterrupted column that makes boots look taller and sweaters look smarter. In the photo, it’s styled with the Summit Fur Vest for a plush, layered winter moment. But imagine it with a sleek turtleneck tucked in and a tailored peacoat in the same wool twill, monochrome and commanding. Suddenly the vibe shifts from cozy chic to city-slick minimalism.
The Peak Pencil Skirt is proof that you don’t need complicated construction to create impact. Sometimes all it takes is beautiful fabric, thoughtful lines, and a silhouette so refined it makes simplicity feel like a statement.

You can also choose the size according to your desired finished garment measurements, blending between sizes as needed. How to Sew The Peak Pencil Skirt
The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Peak Pencil Skirt from start to finish.
3 Tips for Sewing with Wool Twill
⇒ Preshrink your fabric by hand washing or steaming it, unless you plan on only ever dry cleaning your wool skirt.
⇒ You can iron your seams open and flat, but just make sure your iron is on low or medium heat when you put it on the wool. I also recommend using a cloth between your iron and the wool so you don’t accidentally leave burn marks.
⇒ Please don’t omit the lining on this skirt. Wool is itchy and you’ll want something in between the wool and your skin.
Pattern Pieces & Fabric Cuts Needed
- (A) BACK
- Fabric – Cut 2 Mirrored
- Lining – Cut 2 Mirrored
- (B) FRONT
- Fabric – Cut 2 Mirrored
- Lining – Cut 2 Mirrored
Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
Step 1
CONSTRUCT LINING
- Place the front lining pieces on top of the back lining pieces right sides together.
- Pin and sew the side seams of the skirt.
- Open the side seams and press them flat.
- Place the two sides of the skirt right sides together with the side seams lined up.
- Pin and sew the center front seam of the skirt, stopping at the mark where the top of the slit is indicated on the paper pattern.
Step 2
CONSTRUCT SHELL
- Repeat the same exact steps from step 1 but for the wool outer layer of the skirt.
Step 3
WAISTLINE
- Place the waistline of the lining skirt right sides together with the waistline of the shell.
- Pin and sew the waistlines of the skirts together, making sure the side and center front seams are lined up.
- Open the seam and press the seam allowance towards the lining.
- Topstitch the lining to the seam allowance to keep it from sticking out of the waistline.
- Flip the skirt right sides out.
Step 4
CLOSE SLIT
- Flip the skirt inside out again.
- Line up the lining slit with the outer layer slit.
- Pin the lining slit to the outer layer slit.
- Sew the two skirts together, making sure that the top of the slit is finished with a point, as shown in the photo below.
- Clip the area directly under the top of the slit (the point of the triangle) to make sure that the slit is pointed at the top, not rounded, once its flipped right sides out again.
- Flip the skirt right sides out and press the slit.
Step 5
ZIPPER
- Flip the skirt inside out again.
- Sandwich one side of the zipper tape between the lining and the shell while they’re right sides together.
- Sew the length of the zipper while it is sandwiched between the two layers of the skirt.
- Repeat on the other side of the center back of the skirt. Now your zipper tape on your invisible zipper is fully encased between the lining and the shell.
- With the skirt still inside out, fold the skirt along the center back seam to expose the raw edges of the fabric under the zipper.
- Place the center back raw edges right sides together and sew the wool under the zipper to complete the center back seam.
- Repeat the same steps but with the lining.
Step 6
HEM LINING
- Sew a ¼ inch rolled hem on the bottom of the lining skirt.
Step 7
BLIND HEM SHELL
- Press a 1 inch fold into the bottom of the shell skirt.
- Use the blind hem foot on your sewing machine to sew a blind hem on the bottom of the outer skirt. Alternatively, you can sew a blind hem by hand or even a visible hem if your blind hem foot is too intimidating or not cooperating.

I think there is an error in the pattern. It says to place on the fold (back pattern piece), but it also says to cut 2 mirror images giving you 4 pieces. Please clarify
Hi Mary
Thank you so much for pointing it out! You are right, the cut-on-fold symbol shouldn’t be there, the label is correct: cut 2 mirrored. We will update the pattern as soon as possible.
When in doubt, you can always refer to the sewing tutorial pictures in our posts.
