How To Sew The Fiera Maxi Skirt Free Sewing Pattern:
Use a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
Tips for sewing with silk fabric – *100% Silk
- Use a sharp or microtex needle (size 60/8 or 70/10). This type of needle will create clean holes without damaging the silk fibers.
- Use a fine thread, such as polyester or silk thread. Avoid cotton thread, as it can be too thick and cause puckering.
- Use silk pins and sew with a short stitch length of around 2.0 to 2.5mm to have more control over the fabric.
Step 1
Join front and back together at one of the side seams by sewing a French seam.
To sew a French seam, first align the edges of the fabric with wrong sides together.
Sew along the edge of the side seam with 1/4″ seam allowance.
Trim 1/8″ of the seam allowance to reduce bulk, then press open.
Step 2
To finish the French seam, turn the fabric right sides together and sew another 1/4″ along the folded edge, encasing the raw edges inside the seam.
Press the seam to set it or press to one side if desired.
Step 3
Add fusible interlining to the waistband, then fold and sew onto the waistline of the skirt.
Step 4
Measure at least 9″ down the open side seam, then install the zipper below the waistband.
Sew the rest of the seam under the zipper, then finish the seam allowance at the waistband.
Step 5
Sew the hook & eye closure onto the waistband with a sharp hand needle.
Step 6
Finish the bottom of the skirt by sewing a 1/4″ double-folded hem.

This looks beautiful! Is the actual yardage needed listed anywhere, in case we’re not working with this exact fabric, in panels? It looks like about 4 yards?
You need approximately 2.5 yards for sizes 00 to 22 minimum fabric width: 53”
For sizes 24 to 32, you would also 2.5 yards but fabric width must be at least 59” (For grainline direction cutting).
If cutting perpendicular to the grainline, 3 yards are needed.
Great pattern – If I want to do yardage and not a panel, how many yards do I need? I can’t seem to find this information..

It looks like finished hip measurement got messed up on larger sizes. Thanks. Love this pattern
Thank you!
J’adore
Merci beaucoup!
How many yards of fabric are required if one isn’t able to afford those gorgeous silk panels? For size 22.
Approximately 2.5 yards if the fabric is at least 53” wide.
I love this pattern and want to try it with a lightweight gray fabric. But could I do this on the bias? Or wouldn’t it work for this?
Yes you can cut it on the bias, but we recommend to hang your fabric in the bias direction for 24 hours before cutting to avoid twisting in the final skirt.
This is a gorgeous pattern! Would it be possible to shorten this to a midi length? If so, is it possible to just remove length from the bottom or does it need to be removed from a middle point and the lines redrawn?
Thank you! Yes, you can make this a midi skirt by reducing the length at the bottom.
Looking forward to trying this one—thanks to you and Mood for the free pattern! Would this pattern work with a winter-weight fabric, such as a faux suede? I’m thinking I would be able to eliminate sewing the hem and French seams since the fabric won’t fray, and I might be able to eliminate the interfacing? I should note I’m a beginner sewist! Thanks!
Hello, using a faux suede can also work for this pattern. You would be able to eliminate the French seams, interfacing, and hem. You will just need to include the zipper.
I really liked the t-shirt, what is the sewing pattern?
We love that you liked the shirt styled with the Fiera Maxi Skirt! We typically style our new patterns with past patterns when possible; in this instance, we styled the skirt with a top that does not have a free sewing pattern, yet. Check back frequently to see if the pattern becomes available! We post new patterns 1-2x per week. In the meantime, happy sewing! 🙂
Does the pattern include seam allowance?
Yes, this pattern includes 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Hi there! This pattern is lovely. I’m thinking of doing it in 100% Linen. Do you think it will work in this material?
Yes, this can also work well with linen fabric!
Y en mezclilla?
¡Guau, esto quedaría increíble en tela vaquera! ¡Me recuerda a Britney Spears!
Hi, i am 5 feet and want to know if I can just shorten the pattern for my height by the bottom or should I shorten it from the hips or somewhere else?
Also, what is the model’s height so I can adjust accordingly?
Hey Sara! The model is 5’10 and is between a size 2 and 4. I would recommend just shortening the skirt from the hem.
I love it
Love this!
Do I need to change any measurements if I want to add an underskirt?
Hey Johanna! I wouldn’t change anything, just add another layer like a lining.
I love this would I be able to add the zipper to the back as I am hoping to also add pockets cause who doesn’t love them. Is this something that would be possible?
Hey Kaitlin! Yes, you can put the zipper in the back of the dress instead of the side. You just have to cut the back pattern piece in half so that there is a center back seam to insert the zipper. For the pockets, I recommend using the pocket pattern and instructions from the Venice V-Waist dress. The pocket instructions start and step 5.
Wonderful pattern and instructions! These are clear and beginner friendly. Absolutely love it!
