Inspired by the flowing, shimmering waves of the ocean, the Poseidon Pleated Skirt captures movement, light, and effortless elegance in every step. Designed to sway and ripple with you, its soft, sculpted pleats create a striking silhouette that feels both ethereal and timeless.
Sewn in an ultra silky polyester satin in a rich deep teal, you will find yourself lost in the depth of the color and the fluidity of the folds. The fabric catches the light beautifully, enhancing the dimensional effect of the pleats and giving the skirt its signature liquid like drape.
Though it may look structurally intricate, this design is surprisingly approachable. With just two pattern pieces drafted to your exact size, the Poseidon Pleated Skirt is thoughtfully engineered to deliver maximum impact with minimal complexity, making it an ideal project for sewists who love dramatic results without overwhelming construction.
The silhouette is classic and versatile, effortlessly transitioning across seasons, fabrics, and occasions. Imagine it in airy chiffon for summer evenings, structured taffeta for holiday celebrations, or a soft wool blend for autumn days. However you choose to create it, the Poseidon Pleated Skirt is designed to move with you, bold, graceful, and endlessly adaptable.

Find Your Perfect Fit
The Poseidon Pleated Skirt Sizing Guide is based on the suggested design & wearing ease for this style. You can also choose the size according to your desired finished garment measurements, blending between sizes as needed. Measure the printed patterns to make sure the dimensions are according to the desired fitting and adjust if needed before cutting the fabric. For best results, sew a test garment in a similar fabric to adjust your pattern.
Measurements may vary after adjustments. If using non-stretch fabrics, reference the approximate finished garment measurements chart to choose your size.
Note: Always read all the instructions before cutting the fabric!
How to Sew The Poseidon Pleated Skirt
The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Poseidon Pleated Skirt from start to finish.
3 Tips for Sewing with Polyester Satin
⇒ Use a brand new sharp needle on your sewing machine to prevent pulls in the fabric threads.
⇒ Zigzag or serge all your edges because satin frays like crazy.
⇒ For this skirt, it would be incredible helpful to buy pre-pleated fabric so that you don’t have to iron the pleats individually. The pattern for this skirt is made with the assumption that the fabric is already pleated. If you’re using fabric that is not already pleated, you’ll have to do some math to figure out how much fabric you need to achieve the dimensions of the pattern piece before the fabric has been pleated. You’ll also have to decide how wide you want your pleats to be and weather you want to do accordion or box pleats.
Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
Step 1
STAY STITCH PLEATS
- Along the entire length of your pleated fabric, pin every single pleat in place.
- Sew the pleats down with ¼ inch seam allowance. This will be the waistline of your skirt.
Step 2
CUT WAISTLINE
- Note: If you are using the printed pattern, you can skip this draping step and move onto step 3. This step is only if you are using custom measurements rather than a size from the pattern
- Wrap the sewn edge of the pleated fabric around your mannequin or measure your waist to find out the length that you need to cut your fabric. Whatever your waist measurement is, you will want to add between 1-2 inches of fabric to that length depending on when that measurement lands on a pleat.
- In this example, the mannequin had a 26 inch waist, and because the pleat has extra fabric tucked behind the right side of the fabric, I can put my zipper there, and I only need to cut the width of the skirt around the waist to be 27 inches.
Step 3
INSERT ZIPPER
- Place the invisible zipper face down (right sides together) with one of the sides of the center back of the skirt.
- Pin and sew the side of the zipper tape closest to the raw edge of the center back to the skirt.
- Pin the other side of the zipper tape right sides together with the opposite center back of the skirt.
- Sew the opposite side of the zipper tape down, making sure that the waistlines are lined up on both sides of the zipper.
- Open the zipper and trim the extra tape at the top. DO NOT close the zipper after this until the waistband is on.
Step 4
CENTER BACK SEAM
- Place the skirt right sides together with the center back raw edges lined up.
- Pin and sew the center back seam under the sipper.
- Finish the raw edges of the center back seam allowance with a zagzag stitch or serger.
Step 5
MAKE WAISTBAND
- Note: If you are using a size from the pattern, you can just cut that out and follow sub-steps 5.2-5/5 below. Otherwise, you can cut the waistband to your specific measurements.
- Cut the waistband to be 1 inch longer than the width of your skirt waistline.
- Fold the waistband longways, right sides together.
- Sew the short edges on the ends of the waistband together.
- Flip the waistband right sides out and press.
- Fold the raw edges of the waistband into the waistband and press them into place.
Step 6
ATTACH WAISTBAND
- Sandwich the waistline of the skirt into the open edge of the waistband.
- Pin the waistband to the waistline of the skirt.
- Topstitch the bottom edge of the waistband to the waistline of the skirt with ⅛ inch seam allowance.
Step 7
SKIRT HOOKS
- Hand sew skirt hooks (or hook and eye loops) to the overlapping part of your waistband above the zipper at the center back seam of the dress.
Step 8
HEM SKIRT
- Make a hard decision about how short you want to cut your skirt. I wanted mine to be about shin length, so I placed a pin where I wanted it to fall on the mannequin, took it off the mannequin, then cut a straight line 1 inch longer than where I put my pin.
- Zigzag or serge the raw edge of the skirt hem.
- Press a 1 inch fold into the bottom hem of the skirt.
- Use the blind hem foot and stitch on your sewing machine to sew a blind hem into the skirt.
- After finishing the blind hem, re-press the pleats into the hem of the skirt.
