Find Your Perfect Fit
Since this dress begins with draping the fabric on either a dress form or the human body, the measurements shown in the final garment measurements chart are the approximate measurements for each size. Please note, these measurements will vary depending on the individual body or dress form that is used to drape the pattern. For best results sew a test garment in a similar fabric to adjust your fit.
Tips for Sewing with Dobby Fabrics
-
Stabilize Before You Cut
Lay a single layer of your fabric over a self-healing mat or muslin backing to prevent shifting while cutting on the bias. -
Use a Sharp Rotary Cutter
Use pattern weights & a rotary cutter ensures clean, precise edges on delicate bias cuts. Dull scissors can stretch or snag the lightweight dobby weave. -
Let It Rest After Cutting
Once you’ve cut your pieces on the bias, let them hang for 12–24 hours before sewing. This allows the fabric to “drop” naturally and prevents warping later on.
-
Handle with Minimal Tension
Viscose dobby is prone to stretching on the bias, so avoid pulling or tugging as you sew. Support the fabric’s weight as you feed it through your machine. -
Staystitch Immediately
To prevent neckline or armhole distortion, staystitch curved edges as soon as they’re cut. Stitch just inside the seam allowance to hold the shape in place. -
Sew with a Fine Needle and French Seams
Use a size 70/10 microtex or universal needle for clean stitching. To keep seams neat and prevent fraying, opt for French seams or a narrow overlock finish.
How To Sew the Alghero One Shoulder Dress
The following instructions are designed to guide you through draping the pattern prior to sewing, whether you have a dress form at home or a friend to assist you with draping the fabric on the body.
Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
Step 1
DRAPE OVER SHOULDER
Place & pin the fabric over the left shoulder of the dress form.
Step 2
JOIN CORNERS
Join the top and bottom corners together at the back right side of the waist.
Step 3
HORIZONTAL SEAM
Sew a horizontal seam from those two corners up to the end, leaving an opening around 3-5″ for the wrist.
Step 4
DRAPE OPEN SHOULDER
Bring the other side of the fabric under the right arm & join at the back right waist.
Step 5
DIAGONAL SEAM
Sew a diagonal seam down from the back right waist to join the right side under the arm.
(Use a rotary cutter to cut straight horizontally at the bottom of the dress to your desired length)
Step 6
HEM
Sew a 1/4″ doubled-folded hem around the bottom of the dress, the neckline, and the wrist opening.

Ohhh love this draping tutorial and this dress!! I’m definitely going to try it!
You could also market this as “zero waste” since it’s just one rectangle of fabric – no scraps!
You are definitely right, thank you!
I’d like to make this, but does it call for 3 yards or 5? I’m seeing 3 in the materials list and 5 everywhere else
For size small and medium, you only need 3 yards, for a large and extra large, you’ll need between 4 and 5 yards.
