Find Your Perfect Fit
The size guide below is based on the suggested design & wearing ease for this style. You can choose the size according to your desired finished garment measurements, blending between sizes as needed. Measure the printed patterns to make sure the dimensions are according to the desired fitting and adjust—if needed—before cutting the fabric. For best results, sew a test garment in a similar fabric to adjust your pattern.
Note: Measurements may vary after adjustments. If using non-stretch fabrics, reference the approximate finished garment measurements chart to choose your size.
How To Sew the Naxos Swim Suit
The instructions provided are designed to guide you through sewing the main fabric and the self-lining fabric for the Naxos Swim Suit simultaneously.
Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
Swimwear requires specialty fabrics and elastics. Swimwear fabrics, elastics, and notions are designed to withstand sunshine, chlorine, and salt water. Using regular elastic or non-swimwear fabrics is not recommended.
Tips for sewing with Tricot
- Sew with 1⁄2 inch seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
- Use a stretch, ballpoint or jersey needle to avoid skipped stitches.
- Use ballpoint pins when pinning your fabric. You may also use wonder clips.
- Use a wide zig zag stitch on seams to provide stretch (I used a 2.5 mm wide by 2.5 mm long zig zag stitch)
- Use a rotary mat, fabric weights, and rotary cutter when cutting your fabric for precision.
- Use a wide zig zag stitch or twin needle on hems.
- After sewing each seam, press your stitches with an iron on a synthetic setting.
- Extend the shoulder strap to 55” total and cut 2 pieces out of your main fabric.
Step 1
With tailor’s chalk, draw a line at the center front of the swimsuit top between the seam allowances.
Step 2
With wrong sides together, pin the lining and main fabric together on all sides. Baste the swimsuit top together using a 5mm straight stitch.
Step 3
Sew two lines of gathering stitches on both sides of your marked line using a 5mm straight stitch. Do not backstitch. Leave long thread tails to gather.
Step 4
Pull bobbin threads to gather the center front of your swimsuit top. Cut a 1 inch piece of swimwear elastic and pin it to the gathers at the center front on the lining side.
Step 5
Using a wide zig zag stitch, sew down the middle of the elastic to secure the gathers and remove the two lines of basting stitches from the center front.
Step 6
Cut your swimwear elastic the length of your seam for the neckline and bottom of the swimwear top.
Pin the elastic to the neckline and bottom of the seam, matching raw edges and serge or overlock it in place.
Serge or overlock the lining and main fabric together at the side seams.
Remove all basting stitches from the swimsuit top.
Step 7
Hem neckline and bottom edge by folding fabric over 1⁄2 inch to the lining side and pin.
Stitch close to the edge using a wide zig zag stitch.
Step 8
To make the casing, fold side seams over to the lining side by 3⁄4 inch and pin.
Stitch close to the edge using a wide zig zag stitch.
Step 9
SHOULDER STRAPS
With right sides facing, fold shoulder strap on fold line and pin on one short end and long edges.
Step 10
Sew all the way around the shoulder strap using 1⁄4 inch seam allowance and a wide zig zag stitch.
Leave one short end open so you can turn the strap right side out.
Step 11
Trim corners on the one short end of the strap that you stitched and turn the strap right sides out using a loop turner.
Step 12
Tuck in the 1⁄4 inch seam allowance on the unstitched short end and hand stitch the opening closed using a slip stitch.
Repeat steps 9-12 on the second shoulder strap.
Step 13
Thread the shoulder straps through the swimsuit top casings using a safety pin.
Step 14
Tie a bow at the center back and center back neck, and you are all done with your swimsuit top.
Step 15
With right sides facing, pin and sew the center front seam using 1⁄2 seam allowance and a wide zig zag stitch.
Press seam open. Repeat on lining fabric.
Step 16
With right sides facing, pin and sew the center back seam using 1⁄2 inch seam allowance and a wide zig zag stitch.
Press seam open. Repeat on lining fabric.
(tip and trick: Sometimes when sewing with stretchy or thin fabrics you may notice that at the beginning and ending of your seam, your fabric may get caught down in the feed dogs. To avoid this, place a piece of paper behind your fabric at the beginning and ending of your seam and sew as normal. Once complete, remove the paper from your seams.)
Step 17
With right sides together, pin and sew crotch seam on main fabric and lining.
Press seams open.
Step 18
Cut elastic the length of your leg opening seam.
Pin elastic in a ring overlapping ends by 1⁄2 inch.
Sew elastic together with a wide zig zag stitch going back and forth a few times.
Step 19
Pin elastic to the leg openings matching raw edges and making sure the seam of the elastic is pinned to the crotch seam.
Serge or overlock elastic in place using 1⁄4 seam allowance.
Remove basting stitches from the leg openings.
Step 20
Hem leg openings by turning fabric over to the lining side by 1⁄2 inch and pin.
Stitch close to the edge using a wide zig zag stitch.
Step 21
WAISTBAND
With right sides together, fold the waistband in half pinning short ends.
Stitch using a wide zig zag stitch and press seam allowance open.
Step 22
With wrong sides together, fold waistband on fold line having raw edges even.
Pin and baste raw edges together using a 5mm straight stitch.
Step 23
With right sides together, pin the waistband to the shorts at the waistline having raw edges even, matching the center back seam on the waistband to the center back seam of the shorts.
Stitch all the way around using a wide zig zag stitch. Remove basting stitches from the waistline.
Step 24
Finish waistband with a serger, trimming fabric to 3⁄8 inch.
Turn seam allowance to the inside of the shorts and press lightly.
(tip and trick: You may top stitch your seam allowance down using a wide zig zag stitch or stitch in the ditch at the center front and center back of your shorts to keep your waistband seam allowance from flipping up.)

This is really pretty. Is there a possibility of Mood Sewciety offering layered pdf patterns in the future?
Hi! Thank you for your interest! At the moment, our patterns are only available in A4/Letter size, but we’ve noted your request for a layered format as we’re always exploring updates. Can’t wait to see what you create! ✨
No elastic in the waist? Is that right?
Correct, the stretch in the tricot fabric is great for the job! You can also add elastic the waistband if you would like by sewing it in between the waistband.
If I wanted to use this pattern to make cotton panties, what (if anything) should I do differently or keep in mind?
Also, the size XL “hip” body measurements seem to have an incorrect size span.
Hi Malin
You don’t need to make any modifications if you want to keep the same design for your panties, but the fabric must be at least 25% all-way stretch.
Thank you so much for spotting the error in the measurements, you’re absolutely right, the correct measurements should be: 43 – 46″.
We’ve fixed the mistake for future patterns and will update the previous ones as soon as possible.
Thanks again!
Kind Regards

Thanks for this gorgeous pattern Mood! I sewed it up with a few modifications after my toille, most significant just dropping the waist by an inch to reflect my torso proportions and sizing down on the overall size.. my measurements had me at 3XL but after the toille I went down to like a grading between 2XL and XL. Size L top. I found the pattern ran slightly big but I am also new to sewing stretch so I might have over compensated in my toille size choice and then had too much ease. The bottoms are so comfy and lovely coverage pairing well with the skimpier top. Oh! I added elastic to the outer shell at the butt to help with wear and tear My only thing is that the top construction with the ties on the side means the girls are a little unsupported- and I’m not even that busty (B/C Cup). But the ruched top is pretty and you can tie both straps behind you like a bandeau so it’s totally wearable. I might sew up a triangle top too so I can mix and match! I’d leave a photo here so others can see how it turned out but don’t think I can add a pic sadly! Once I got my machines flowing I found this a really quick make. Happy sewing and beaching!
Newbie here. I followed the patter, used the large pattern but when it was all put together it fit like a double 00. D
Hi Jo
The tricky part about choosing a size for stretchy garments like swimwear is that you need to check how much the fabric you are using stretches, since some fabrics stretch less than others. This specific swimsuit is designed to fit snugly, so in cases like this I recommend checking the finished garment measurements and testing your fabric to see whether, when stretched, it will give you the fit you want.
You can also do the opposite: test the fabric directly on your body, for example around your waist, stretching it until it feels as fitted as you prefer, and then choose the size with measurements that match that measurement. And remember the size chart shows the garment measurements unstretched.
