Find Your Perfect Fit
Designed for stretch fabrics. Size guide is based on the suggested design and wearing ease for this style. There is negative ease due to the stretch of the fabric. You can choose the size according to your desired finished garment measurements, blending between sizes as needed. For best results, sew a test garment in a similar fabric to adjust you pattern.
Tips for Sewing with Carbon Brushed Twill
-
Pre-Wash and Dry
With 98% cotton content, pre-wash your fabric as it will likely shrink. Wash and dry it as you plan to launder your finished capri. -
Needle Selection
Use a stretch or ballpoint machine needle (either size 70/10 or 80/12) to help prevent skipped stitches. With a rounded tip, these needles push the fabric’s fibers apart, rather than piercing them. -
Pressing Matters
Press in between steps using a medium iron setting with steam to achieve crisp seams and hems. (Always test a scrap first!)
-
Test Stitch Settings on Scraps
Prior to sewing your garment, test your stitch length and tension on scraps or swatches of your fabric. -
Stitch Length
Overall, a slightly longer stitch length (2.5mm – 3mm) will allow for a little more give. But for areas that experience a little more strain (like the crotch and side seams), consider using a narrow zig-zag stitch (05.mm width, 2.5mm length) or a serger/overlocker. For topstitching, opt for a bit longer stitch length (3mm – 3.5mm) for a more prominent look. As twill tends to fray, finishing seams with a serger/overlocker or zig-zag stitch is optimal for durability.
How To Sew the Promenade Capri Pants
The steps below are designed to guide you through sewing our beginner-friendly capri pants pattern.
Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
Step 1
BACK DARTS
Sew the darts on each side of the back pants.
Step 2
SIDE SEAMS
With right sides together, sew the front to the back of the pants pieces along the side seams, leaving open the space for the zipper (your zipper length) and the bottom slits (about 2-3 inches).
Step 3
SIDE SLITS
Sew the side slits at the bottom of each pant leg.
Step 4
APPLYING RIBBON TO THE SIDE SEAMS
Zipper Opening
Measure the zipper opening and cut two pieces of ribbon. Each should be at least ½ inch wide. Cut them to match the length of the zipper opening
Place one ribbon piece along each edge of the zipper opening and top stitch being careful not to sew the seam allowance, which should already be pressed to the wrong side of the fabric.
Bottom Slits
Use ribbon that is either 1 inch wide, or twice as wide as the one you used for the zipper opening
Fold the ribbon over the raw edges of the slits at the bottom of the pants so it encloses them neatly.
Top stitch around the ribbon to secure it to the edges, making sure both sides are held in place.
SIDES
Measure the side seam of your pants from the start of the zipper opening down to the start of the bottom slit.
Cut a piece of ribbon to that length and sew it along the seam line.
Step 5
SIDE ZIPPER
Sew the invisible zipper at the top of the left side seam, then finish sewing the seam below.
Step 6
CENTER SEAMS
With right sides of the fabric together, sew along the front rise to join both pant fronts.
(Repeat for the back rise to join both pant backs)
Step 7
INSEAM
Sew the front and back of the pants together along the inseam.
Step 8
HEM
Finish the bottom of the pant legs with a rolled hem.
Step 9
FACINGS
Sew the front and back facings together at the right side seam.
(Finish the bottom edge with a regular hem)
Step 10
ATTACH FACING
Pin and sew the facing along the waistline of the pants.
(Match the side seams for accurate placement)
Step 11
UNDERSTITCH FACING
Understitch the seam allowance to the facing with 1/8″ from the seam.
Step 12
TOP STITCH
Top stitch along the waistline with 1/8″ from the edge.

Looks cute! Can you confirm that this pattern only needs 1 yard of fabric but 3 yards of ribbon?
Yes, that is the correct amount for a size small. Take a look at our “shop this look” box where you can get the required amount for each size.
Hi Mike. Is there any way you can include the instructions as a PDF, also? That would be helpful. Thanks.
Hi Candice, thanks for your comment and for asking about a PDF version of the instructions! Right now, we exclusively offer the sewing instructions directly within the blog post. We really appreciate your feedback and will definitely keep it in mind for future patterns.
These are very nice. Is there any possibility of Mood Sewciety offering layered pdf patterns in the future?
Thank you for the compliment and feedback—we are elated to know you like the capri pants! Currently, we offer the A4/Letter size version (with all sizes) exclusively; as we understand that having layered patterns would be incredibly helpful, we hope to provide more formats and features in the future. Your feedback helps us prioritize these improvements! Happy Sewing! ✨
Is there a possibility of using denim with this pattern?
Absolutely! I recommend using a denim that has a little bit of stretch to it since the pattern is meant to be pretty fitted to the body.
is there a way to make this elastic waistband instead of a zipper
Hey there! If you’d like to add an elastic waistband instead of the zipper, I recommend omitting the darts in the waistline so that the waist of the capris are wide enough to slide over your hips.
Hello! What would be the best way to omit the ribbons on the side of these pants?
Surely! You can make these pants by just sewing the side seams without the ribbons.
