The Boca Resort Dress Sizing Guide is based on the suggested design & wearing ease for this style. You can also choose the size according to your desired finished garment measurements, blending between sizes as needed. Measure the printed patterns to make sure the dimensions are according to the desired fitting and adjust if needed before cutting the fabric. For best results, sew a test garment in a similar fabric to adjust your pattern.

How to Sew The Boca Resort Dress
The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Boca Resort Dress from start to finish.
3 Tips for Sewing with Cotton Twill
⇒ Wash and dry your fabric before cutting out the pattern. Cotton twill shrinks the first time you launder it.
⇒ Use a denim needle on your sewing machine. This cotton twill is pretty thick and stiff and an ultra sharp, ultra strong needle will make sewing it a breeze.
⇒ Since twill has such a tight weave, it can be difficult to tell the right side of the fabric from the wrong side. Keep in mind that the right side of the fabric is going to be softer, slightly shinier, and has thin, diagonal ticking while the wrong side is duller and has a standard warp and weft.

BODICE SHOULDER & SIDE SEAMS
- Place the front bodice pieces right sides together on top of the back bodice pieces.
- Pin and sew the front and back bodice pieces at the side and shoulder seams.

Step 7
INSERT SLEEVES
- Flip the bodice pieces inside out.
- Pin the sleeve caps to the armscyes.
- Sew the sleeves to the bodice.
- Press the seam allowance at the armscye away from the bodice.
Step 8
GATHER WAIST
- Sew two parallel straight stitches with a stitch length of 4 millimeters at the bottom hem of both bodice pieces, making sure not to backstitch on either side of the seam.
- Begin pulling on the top threads of the two straight stitches to gather the waistline of the blouse.
- Gather the waistlines of the two bodice pieces until they are each half the length of the skirt waistline.
- Pin the gathered waistlines of the bodice to the waistline of the skirt, right sides together, making sure that the center fronts of the bodice pieces are touching in the middle but not overlapping.
- Sew and serge the bodice pieces to the skirt waistline.
- Press the waistline seam flat.
Step 9
INVISIBLE ZIPPER
- Place the zipper face down on the wearer’s left side of the center back opening, making sure that the end of the zipper teeth are lined up with the seam that connects the collar to the collar facing.
- Pin and sew the rightmost side of the zipper tape to the left side of the center back opening.
- Flip the dress inside out.
- Pin and sew the other side of the zipper tape to the other side of the center back opening, making sure to line up the waist and neckline seams on both sides.
- Flip the neckline facing out from the inside of the bodice so that it is right sides together with the center back neckline.
- Pin the neckline facing right sides together with the center back neckline of the dress, making sure the zipper tape is sandwiched between the two layers.
- Sew the neckline facing to the collar at the center back seam.
- Clip the corners of the neckline facing and flip the facing back toward the inside of the dress.
- Line up the fabric under the zipper at the center back seam, right sides together.
- Pin and sew the rest of the center back seam under the zipper.
- Press the center back seam open and flat.
Step 10
HEM
- (Optional) Serge the raw edges of the hem.
- Fold the hem up by 1 inch then press the fold.
- Sew the hem in place with ¾ inch seam allowance.
Step 11
FINISH NECK TIES
- Sew a zigzag stitch with a stitch length of 0.8 millimeters and a stitch width of 2 millimeters along the raw edges of the ties at the neckline to prevent them from fraying (this is like putting a bartack on the ends of the ties, if you don’t happen to have a bartack machine lying around).

This dress is gorgeous! And the bag? Stunning! Can we get a pattern to this bag too?
Hey Ewaa, this is the Spirea tote from the Mood Sewciety Blog.
Love this chic design. Would request a short or three quarters sleeve length. Any suggestions ?
Hi Jennifer
That’s a great idea. You can start with a basic 3/4-length sleeve (or whatever length you prefer) and use the cut and spread method to achieve the sleeve shape we use. If you need any assistance, feel free to email me at sandy@moodfabrics.com
I’d be happy to show you exactly how I cut and spread the pattern to get that shape 🙂
The way the model stands and the way the fabric sits makes the outfit look stiff and uncomfortable.
Hey Holly! This dress is meant to LOOK stiff, but the cotton twill is actually quite soft. Alternately, you are more than welcome to use a softer, thinner fabric like a linen woven.
I think this looks beautiful. I am thinking I may want to do a color blocking with it. How much fabric would I need just for the top of the dress? I might do something different on the bottom.
Hi Alex,
One and a half yards should be sufficient, but I would need to know the size you are making and the width of your fabric to give you a more accurate estimate. You can email me at sandy@moodfabrics.com with your information, and I’ll be happy to help.
Hello! Any thoughts on using a fabric like this with this pattern: https://www.moodfabrics.com/products/reverie-victorian-gold-solid-polyester-satin-ms-victorian-gold
Looking to makes gold dress for a resort vacation coming up!
Hi rachael
It’s satin of course you can use it, and your dress will turn out beautiful! very nice choice <3
The only thing I would recommend is using interfacing for the neckline facings so the design doesn’t lose structure.
Thank you, Sandy!
This dress is so cute and I’m always looking for travel clothing to wear. I do need to alter it a bit to make it more modest for religious reasons. What would be the best way to alter the front so that the “V” isn’t so plungy (I don’t think that’s a word. hahaha)? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your continuing free patterns. I also lost a lot of weight (120 lbs) so I’m kind of starting from scratch to make a new wardrobe and your patterns are so very helpfulf.
Hi Jennifer
Thank you so much for your comment! we are really glad you like the pattern 🙂
For what you’d like to do, you will first need to straighten the center front line of the pieces, since it currently has a slight angle opening toward the neckline. Adjust it so the center front becomes a perfectly vertical line.
From there, you have a few options:
You can add a 1/2″ extension to create a button placket and add buttons.
You could insert a zipper. In this case, you dont need to add the extension.
Or you can simply sew the two front pieces together up to the point where you’d like the neckline opening to end.
Let us know how it comes out.
Happy Sewing!
hi, my measurement does not fit the measurement on the chart for this dress, I would like to get help adjusting it to my measurement please!
Hi Noa
I’d be happy to help! You can send me your measurements at sandy@moodfabrics.com, and I’ll guide you in choosing your size or adjusting the patterns if needed.
I have printed and cut out my pattern. I may have missed this, but what width fabric should be used? Also I am only 5’2 and I am pretty sure I’ll need to shorten the skirt. May I send an email to someone to determine how many yards of fabric I need? Thank you.
Hi Tamara
I got your email, I am replying you there as we speak, Im going to need some of your measurements. Thankyou 🙂
Erratum Notice – Pattern Label Correction
We would like to inform you of a labeling error in this pattern. The front and back skirt pieces have been incorrectly labeled.
– The piece labeled “Back” is actually the Front skirt.
– The piece labeled “Front” is actually the Back skirt.
To identify them correctly: the Front skirt piece is the one with the curved upper edge.
Please note that the pattern piece diagram on page 3 (pattern information section) shows the correct naming-shape and can be used as a reference.
We apologize for any confusion this may cause and appreciate your understanding.
