How to Sew The Merano Balloon Sleeve Blouse
The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Merano Balloon Sleeve Blouse from start to finish.
3 Tips for Sewing with Liverpool Knit
⇒ Iron on low or medium heat when you press your seams open.
⇒ Use a ballpoint or stretch needle on your sewing machine to avoid skipped stitches.
⇒ You don’t necessarily have to use a zigzag or stretch stitch on this fabric. You can just set your straight stitch to have a stitch length of 1.5 millimeters and this allows the fabric to stretch a bit without the thread popping.
Pattern Pieces & Fabric Cuts Needed
- (A) BACK
- Fabric – Cut 2 Mirrored
- (B) FRONT
- Fabric – Cut 1 on Fold
- (C) BACK FACING
- Fabric – Cut 2 Mirrored
- (D) FRONT FACING
- Fabric – Cut 1 on Fold
Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
Step 1
INTERFACING
- Cut out pieces of interfacing that match the neckline facing pieces.
- Press the fusible interfacing onto the wrong side of the neckline facing pieces.
Step 2
FACINGS
- Layout the back neckline facings right sides together on top of the front neckline facing.
- Pin the short ends of the facings together as shown in the photo below.
- Press the facing seams open and flat.
- Fold the inner curved edges of the facings toward the wrong side of the fabric and press a ½ inch fold into the raw edges.
- Sew a single folded hem onto the inner curved edge of the facings.
Step 3
SIDE SEAMS
- Layout the back blouse pieces right sides together on top of the front blouse piece.
- Pin the sleeve inseams and side seams of the blouse.
- Sew along the pins.
- Clip the inner corner of the sleeve so that it lays flat when flipped right sides out.
- Press the side seams and sleeve inseams open and flat.
Step 4
SEW FACINGS
- Pin the neckline facings right sides together with the neckline of the blouse (Note that the shoulder seams are not closed yet, so the neckline is one big opening right now).
- Sew the facing to the neckline and sleeves.
- Clip the seam allowance of ONLY the interfaced facing pieces to eliminate some bulk at the neckline.
- Flip the blouse right sides out and press the facings toward the inside of the blouse.
Step 5
INVISIBLE ZIPPER
- Lay the zipper face down on the wearer’s left side of the center back opening of the blouse.
- Pin the side of the zipper tape closest to the raw edge of the fabric. Make sure the top of the zipper tape lines up with the top of the neckline, NOT the top of the neckline facing.
- Sew the zipper tape over the pins and close to the teeth.
- Flip the top inside out.
- Pin the other side of the zipper tape to the opposite side of the center back opening, making sure the hems and necklines line up.
- Sew the other side of the zipper tape close to the teeth.
- Zip the zipper to make sure there is no fabric or thread stuck in the teeth.
Step 6
ENCASE ZIPPER ENDS
- Fold the ends of the neckline facings right sides together with the back of the blouse, sandwiching the ends of the zipper tape in between the facing and the blouse back.
- Pin the ends of the facing to the center back seam of the blouse.
- Sew along the pins over the zipper tape.
- Clip the corners of the back neckline.
- Flip the facing towards the inside of the blouse.
- Press the zipper and facings at the center back of the blouse.
Step 7
CENTER BACK SEAM
- Pin and sew the rest of the center back seam of the blouse under the zipper.
- Press the center back seam open and flat.
Step 8
SHOULDER SEAMS
- Mark the ends of the shoulder seams (indicated by notches in the pattern) with pins.
- Thread a hand sewing needle with a knot at the end of the thread.
- Sew a ladder stitch to connect the front and back blouse pieces at the shoulder seams. Start sewing at the pins and finish sewing when you get to the neckline.
- Tie off the hand stitching.
- Repeat for both shoulders.
Step 9
HEM
- Press a ½ inch fold into the hem of the blouse.
- Sew the hem with a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
Step 10
BUTTON CLOSURE
- Hand sew a button to the wearer’s back right side of the blouse at the very top of the zipper.
- Create a crocheted (chain stitched) loop of thread on the center back neckline of the blouse opposite to the button, making sure the loop is big enough to fit around the button (a more in-depth tutorial for chain stitching thread can be found in the tutorial for the Cassis Tiered Sleeve Blouse in step 8).
- Tie off the hand stitching.

Looking forestd to making this! But minus the zip, personslly i find back zips to be uncomfortable to wear! Especislly on knir fabrics, it goes against the flow of the fabric! So it will be just a lovely button and rouleau loop for me!

Hey Anna! Yes this pattern would absolutely work with a woven fabric as long as you make sure you cut out a size big enough that you can put it on without having to stretch it.

You mention that you weren’t crazy about the liverpool knit…..I really like the look. Would you suggest another fabric that could generate the same amount of ‘chic’?? Excited to make it.
Honestly, it wasn’t horrible to work with. I’m generally not a fan of sewing with knit fabric because I lose my patience once it starts shifting around and stretching under the needle. That being said, it’s not actually a bad choice for this blouse. It turned out really nice in the photos. If you DON’T want to use a knit fabric, you can go in a lot of directions: brocade, linen, even denim if you wanted. Since this shirt has the facing on the neckline and sleeves, it has a really nice clean finished look no matter what fabric you use.
This Merano Balloon Sleeve Blouse pattern looks amazing! The combination of structure and drape is perfect. Can’t wait to try the free download and experiment with different fabrics like Ponte or Crepe Knit.

This is my new favorite, and you’ve been putting out a LOT of beautiful designs. I made this out of a bedsheet and it comes out so cute. The sleeve is short and eye-catching and gives GREAT armflap coverage for those of us sensitive about them. It’s a fast sew even with me over complicating things like stay stitching and serging. I didn’t have an invisible zip on hand so my exposed zip came out “funny” but fine. The neck is a little high for my taste, but adjusting that for the next one is super easy. I was between sizes but it graded perfectly and I also made it a little longer. The directions are simple, but ironing and pressing cannot be stressed enough and a little bit of “couture” ladder stitching at the end is lovely.
I am totally making another one right now out of the last of the bedsheeting so I have two blouses for one skirt. There was JUST enough.
I REALLY can’t wait to make another out of more fashionable fabric, lol!

I also needed more than a yard for the medium—you can’t get the facings out of one yard of 60″ after you cut the body. I think it took about 1/2 an additional yard for the facings.
