Hey team, this is so inspiring! I’m struggling to find the Nettle Wrap Dress Redux instructions anywhere! Would you be able to share please? Thank you!!!!
Hi! It’s so great that you’re feeling inspired to tackle the Nettle Wrap Dress Redux!
Here is the link: https://blog.moodfabrics.com/free-dress-patterns-for-your-summer-wardrobe/
The bottom skirt layer of the Nettle dress (pictured in yellow) uses the original skirt pattern piece, slightly altered to include more length. While this is an intermediate-level project, the “slash and spread” technique used to extend the yoke is easy to understand even for a beginner. Additionally, instead of using the ring loop and sewing the tie at the front edge (between the yoke and yoke lining), we eliminated those pieces and opted for a thicker, single-width tie that wraps around the waist.
To lengthen the skirt, make an additional copy of your pattern piece and follow these steps:
Mark and Cut: Determine where you want to add length—usually in the middle, between the waist and hem. Mark straight, horizontal lines across your traced pattern piece (perpendicular to the grainline) and cut along them completely.
Spread: Place the sections onto a larger sheet of paper. Gently spread the top and bottom pieces apart by your desired length. Ensure the gap is even across the entire width to maintain the original shape.
Finalize: Tape the pieces down and redraw the side seams to reconnect the sections seamlessly, extending the original angle.
It might be helpful to create a miniature version to practice before moving to full scale. Have fun, and happy sewing!
Hey, I’ve read the previous comments about the yellow nettle dress. I am wondering if the longer skirt-piece is just lengthened or also spread for more width or fullness at the bottom? I would love to make this version for summer-holiday! Thank you!
Hi Julia! The bottom skirt layer of the Nettle dress (pictured in yellow) uses the original skirt pattern piece, only slightly altered to include more length by utilizing a slash and spread technique.
To clarify, for this specific “Redux” version, we only added length rather than extra fullness or width at the bottom. To do this yourself, you would mark a horizontal line across your pattern piece (perpendicular to the grainline) and spread the sections apart by the desired amount.
Additionally, instead of sewing the tie at the front edge with the ring loop as seen in the original green version, we eliminated those pieces for this version. We opted for a thicker, single-width tie that wraps around the entire waist to complete the look.
It’s an intermediate-level adjustment, but definitely manageable for a summer project! Happy sewing!
Soooo beautiful
I couldn’t agree more! There’s nothing quite like the feeling of sewing with lighter fabrics and brighter colors as the seasons change. Happy sewing!
