It’s fashion season, and the first wave of Spring/Summer 2023 fashion shows wrapped up last week at New York Fashion Week. As expected, Pantone colors were sprinkled into collections for lots of vibrant fun. Nostalgia continues to thrive in fashion, as lots of the styles might make you pinch yourself to make sure you weren’t back in the 2010’s, including a few controversial, love/hate styles. Ahead, we’re breaking down the top trends from NYFW S/S ‘23.
Styles
Fly-Away Tops
Bare it all with this trend that focuses on freeing the tummy. Cardigans, button-downs, and capes with a simple tie or closure across the chest displayed beachy vibes begging for a windy walk by the ocean.
Spicy Button-Downs
With several variations of the button-down trend, it’s safe to say that the button-down has been reinvented, and there’s a style for practically every day of the week. Think button-down dresses with oversized sleeves or cutouts-maybe even both!
Fun Hemlines
The bubble hem and the hi-low have made their way back into fashion; I am reluctant concerning both, but I’m warming up to them. Looks ranged from voluminous bubble dresses and strapless midi pieces that spanned from gigantic to much more understated, and it was a similar experience with the high-low trend. It’s much easier to be on board when the accents aren’t so in your face.

Twisted Silhouettes
A style made especially for accentuating the body. This one is well worth a bit of patience.
Flared Out
Bell bottoms are back, baby! No, they aren’t the only flared beauty on the list for spring, but it’s the winner in my book. If you love flared sleeves and bottoms, then we are on the same page, and the fashion experts support the movement.
Cargo Pockets
The more pockets, the merrier! This utilitarian style is all about clean lines and functionality. Designers displayed cargo pockets on dresses, pants, jackets, and more, offering a utility look giving Kim Possible and early aughts vibes.
Fabrics
Translucent
This wave of sheer fabric for S/S is loose-fitting and as easy breezy as the wind whistling through the material onto the skin. With an emphasis on flowy slip dresses, loose tank tops, and sheer inserts, there’s a more carefree approach to translucent fabrics than usual, and it’s refreshing.
Wearable Fringe
Running alongside the flapper trend, the catwalks were covered in fringe. This didn’t strike me as a trend worth mentioning at first, then I realized that designers made fringe more of an accent than a statement detail. Fringe in moderation is easier to adapt to your wardrobe, and that’s the fringe look worth mentioning.
Colors
Warm weather tends to be all about the bright colors, so NYFW SS ‘23 followed suit with bold Barbiecore pinks, plenty of lavender, and a few other standout colors. While other colors made an appearance, lime green and tangerine took the lime-light, if you will. Neon colors paired with suiting and gorgeous gowns made neon look more versatile than expected.
Honorable mention for prints: Carolina Herrera set the bar high for SS prints with the most dreamy and romantic floral prints. The 3-D florals took me to a fairy garden or a high tea party, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
NYFW was a wild ride, with the key takeaways being neon colors, sparkly fabrics, and lots of little details. I tried to keep this as condensed as possible but with so many trends to choose from and cover. The next stop is London Fashion Week, and I’m excited to see what’s in store!
